Don’t Be Fooled-“I Need A Hero”

can we talkI sat there this morning and read a few posts and thought people are in need. People need help. The difficulty was they were too often turning to a man or a woman with the belief that one person was going to save them, rescue them.

Too many are relying on the gift or calling of God in helping them avoid their personal growing up process. In the worst of cases this can turn to manipulation, groveling, self-degradation and a life style rife with dangerous results. In the world many will lie, cheat, turn to illegal activities and more to stay on keel. In the church too often we turn to the gift.

True understanding of the gift (Ephesians 4:11) and equipping will always point people to Christ. He is our blessed hope! Not a man or a woman. We have placed too many on the altar in place of God Himself to the detriment of truth gain ground.

I recognize the value of men and women, but we know all too well, “hurt people hurt people.” The man or woman who draws “all me unto themselves” are setting both the person they are desirous to help AND themselves up for failure. I am reminded of the phrase “scorched earth” where everything is destroyed in an effort to keep it out of the hands of the enemy. The very fact that people “need to be needed” opens the door to this scenario.

And while I was going to just sit through this morning I felt a warning rise up. Do NOT avoid the pain of growing up.

I kept hearing Bonnie Tyler’s 1984 hit “I Need A Hero” run through my head. Too often…

  • We have people who need a hero
  • People who think they are a hero (Popular thinking aside, MOST heroes do not think they are!
  • People who need a hero and believe they are the “one”

There are to use our language, heroes. Heroes who save lives, protect countries and heroes of faith.  But there is one true hero and His name is Jesus. But let us stay with Bonnie Tyler for a moment.

She poses some valid questions and defines heroism fairly well.

  • Where have all the good men gone?
  • Where’s the street-wise Hercules?
  • Isn’t there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
  • And he’s gotta be fresh from the fight (A valid point of trust)

And finally she says this,

“Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I could swear that there’s someone somewhere watching me”

She gets it!

Today give consideration to the one who has already accomplished all you need to have.

“I Need A Hero” was written by Jim Steinman;dean Pitchford.

Sung by Bonnie Tyler

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the Gods?
Where’s the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?

Isn’t there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and I turn
And I dream of what I need

I need a hero, I’m holding out for a hero
‘Til the end of the night
He’s gotta be strong
And he’s gotta be fast
And he’s gotta be fresh from the fight

I need a hero, I’m holding out for a hero
‘Til the morning light
He’s gotta be sure
And it’s gotta be soon
And he’s gotta be larger than life
(Larger than life)

Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There’s someone reaching back for me

Racing on the thunder
And rising with the heat
It’s gonna take a Superman
To sweep me off my feet

I need a hero, I’m holding out for a hero
‘Til the end of the night
He’s gotta be strong
And he’s gotta be fast
And he’s gotta be fresh from the fight

I need a hero, I’m holding out for a hero
‘Til the morning light
He’s gotta be sure
And it’s gotta be soon
And he’s gotta be larger than life
I need a hero, I’m holding out for a hero
Til the end of the night

Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I could swear that there’s someone somewhere watching me
Through the wind and the chill and the rain
And the storm and the flood
I can feel his approach like a fire in my blood

I need a hero, I’m holding out for a hero
‘Til the end of the night
He’s gotta be strong
And he’s gotta be fast
And he’s gotta be fresh from the fight

I need a hero, I’m holding out for a hero
‘Til the morning light
He’s gotta be sure
And it’s gotta be soon
And he’s gotta be larger than life
