I was thinking about a friends recent Facebook post with regard to the elections and how he wondered if the person who will be elected is perhaps not even in the running yet.
I thought a little bit about that and I think many years ago that might have been true that there would have been somebody who could have come out of nowhere and change things and I’m not saying it can’t happen but I wonder if these things work against it.
For instance…
History
I am not talking about the history of the United States or the Presidential run, but this is an observation. A lot of the upcoming generation know little about history. Little about the presidency, who is in the legislature and what it even may mean. Let alone where the states are located. (How many know the four branches of government?)
So without a knowledge of a man or woman’s history how could they come to the forefront? (Not saying it could not happen.)
Short Attention Spans
In this digital age where everything has come down to milliseconds to gain information. The upside of this is we can obtain information fast. But the downside is that the information comes so quickly that there is little time to digest or gain solid standing because the next wave is imminent.
How would someone be able to break in when we are fighting against the reality of a digital world? One finds it hard to enter the speed of digital environments.
Overactive News Cycles
Fear drives news as much as the need for commercial dollars. One often does not have time even if they have the ability to research and determine truth.
The media has the ability to accept or reject, king build or manure pile those they deem “the one”.
Failure Of Authority
We have had so many leaders fail either through immorality, stupidity or purposed criminality that many find it impossible to trust.
Who would they trust? What would be the criteria? Would they even want a leader?
The church has undergone its own inability to convey its history in a manner that some would consider authentic. And it has lost momentum here and there but the promise is true. (The Kingdom is expanding.) Our need to develop disciples may sometimes appear to hang in the balance while attention spans and news cycles mess with us.
Will someone come out of the hiddenness for the elections? I think not. But could it happen? Of course.
So as you look at those 4 bullet points, ask yourself if you if you have succumbed to some of these pulls and if the answer is “yes” perhaps it is time to evaluate your thinking.
For me? I await men and women to come out of their hiddenness all over the world.
