Will They Remember 9/11/01

A friend of mine, Carmen Bywater took this photo.

9/11/01

My wife and I were headed out to be at my mother’s side. She had pancreatic cancer and we were driving out there to say our good byes. We had loaded up the car and were headed out across Connecticut and into New York. I remarked to my wife, “what a beautiful day. Surprised we can not see any planes as close as we are to the city.” Little did I know a rest area would have folks gathered around the TV as the towers fell. My wife came out to tell me. I turned on the radio and we heard story after story. As we got close to Buffalo, traffic was backing up for miles and gas prices were soaring. People were reporting of looting and price gouging and even weapons being pulled. Continue reading Will They Remember 9/11/01

Do Not Let The Devil Capture Your Feed

Just a thought?
Just a thought?

The warfare of the enemy.

This morning as I received yet another call for prayer, I thought about what I believe.

I believe that all of the work Jesus did on earth is finished in the sense that He has left us ALL authority. I believe that the devil is defeated and His access to God is removed. I believe that the devil is beneath me and not above me. I believe that I am seated at the right hand of the throne of God in Christ. That there is no end to the love of the Father for me. And that He never stops talking to me!

So, I have given contemplation to some things. Continue reading Do Not Let The Devil Capture Your Feed

Plan B – Growing An Alternative Perhaps

A Word To Hear
A Word To Hear

A lot of my friends need a Plan B. Members of my family could use a Plan B. Few people adhere to plan A with the ferocity of a Tim Tebow, who regardless of what has been offered is planning on living out his plan A of being a quarterback in the NFL. But I would bet you that Tim Tebow in fact, has a plan B building in his life. I would imagine he has a  form or stream of income that is being created. A career after football, perhaps.

A plan B does not mean you give up on plan A. It is simply an option, or a fallback position or something that gives you great joy. Continue reading Plan B – Growing An Alternative Perhaps

By What Every Joint Supplies –

jointI love that scripture. In 2001 I had the words “by what every joint supplies…”(Ephesians 4:16) put on the back of my motorcycle. Many doors have been opened over this. To the world it speaks of joints and pot. To believers it revealed my thoughts about touching community and people. Lately it is taking on a life of it’s own.

Over the last few weeks I have been helping a friend on her website. It is a beauty site. My friend is anti-airbrushing ads and pictures, the “real deal” and “let’s look our best, ladies!” She also battles an unusual illness. I pray for her a lot.

I often see similarities in real life mirrored in prophetic life. Or vice versa.

The emerging church is a lot like my friend and her business. As the church we have an idea or mandate that we are to carry the gospel forward into all the world. This is much like the use of her site. It is the broadcasting or the publishing of His goodness. In her case, she is reaching women. Lots of them.

My friend is trying to remove the falseness and error of fake beauty. Like that, Jesus comes into our life to affirm that which He has sown, that we might not get caught up in that which is error or falseness.

Her desire is to be the real deal. Jesus comes alongside and His nature makes us beautiful. We are made the real deal.

Anyone can look their best. Jesus believes that as well. He knew us before the foundations of the earth.

And like my friend, we often see there is a battle to be who God called you or I to be.

My friend has an illness that affects her with pain. It begins in a joint. Jesus wants to heal her. The church has an enemy that would like to injure or cause pain. It injures a joint and affects tissues and nerves. Why? Because it is the place of supply! Ephesians 4:16

I had a dream on abundance the other night. And the Lord showed me this morning that Ephesians 4:11-16 is important to the process. To the coming supply! Not walking about in the “futility of our minds.” Ephesians 4:17

There is a supply that is available. It is clear we must tap into it.

My favorite science was biology. Anyone that knew me knew I wanted to be a doctor. (Even later in life a doctor friend was trying to get me to look to it.) Long before I was a follower of Christ I was intrigued by the body and its makeup.

A joint in the human body is a place of contact between two bones. It is a place of changing direction. In this joint there is a secretion of fluid (Synovial fluid from the Latin word for egg. You should be getting excited right about now!) The secretion of this fluid provides for a reduction of friction, shock absorption and nutrient and waste transport. It is also a place of many nerves (A nerve center – Hilton’s Law says “the nerves supplying the muscles extending directly across and acting at a given joint also innervate the joint”.)

The joint is:

  • A nerve center, reading the mail from limb to brain.
  • A supply of nutrients bringing nourishment.
  • A supply of lubricant-removing friction.
  • A supply of buffering or anti-shock system.
  • A place of changing direction and purpose.

A place of supply. Let the arising of the joints come forth. Let the joints arise to their true purpose. For equipping. For structure. That the ligaments would hold fast and remain joined.

Like my friend the church is coming into a place of full understanding and supply.

A Word To Hear
A Word To Hear

I opened my email this morning and had a surprise letter. Because it had been years since I had heard from this person, I thought perhaps it was spam. It was not.

The content of that letter has led me to this.

Maybe it is because of a different culture I grew up in or I see things differently (That could be a real possibility!) but I struggle when I see the “new” person in the room and cannot get to them. Not because of a “notch” on a spiritual belt I am making but because I want people to taste the Jesus I know. The reality of church fellowship is that more than 80% of “new” people show up in a church assembly because you invite them. And they say that the average person needs 6 contacts within 2 months to stay or feel welcome. (Interesting that a relationship will allow a person to overcome a style or a culture and stay.) My Method Of Thought -The Wave To Come

A Word To Hear
A Word To Hear

My method of thought….

Many have already said that is an oxymoron. But in reality I do. I have lots of things that just bubble over time in my life. The last few days have been spent “cleaning” up files. Always interesting as I have a number of files that appear “incomplete.” Yet every now and then I will return to them and add a topic or a sentence to them. The Cardinal and The Church – A Little Birdie Told Me

cardinalLast week I was bemoaning the fact that I had not seen a cardinal since early spring. As the few snows melted away in the early part of the year there were a couple of them that brightened my view. But it had been months.

This morning I decided to take on the humidity of the day. I walked down the road and took a new path. As I moved down the path, I could see the bright red creature, flitting around the pathway. A cardinal! I could tell it was eating breakfast as the result of the thunderstorm last night. There were bugs, worms and seeds alongside a small puddle. He just bounced around. As I shortened the distance between us, it flew up to a fence rail on the side of the path. Finally as I was a few feet away, it arced up to a light on the side of the neighboring building. And moments after that it began to make effort to get under the roof overhang. Continue reading The Cardinal and The Church – A Little Birdie Told Me

Playing Games – Too Often What We See Is Like Playing A Game

A Word To Hear
A Word To Hear

This morning as I thought about our local church fellowship I reflected on many of the church fellowships that I have attended over the years. The majority of the church fellowships that I have been involved in including one that I pastored for 15 years often looked at a need and went to bring reparation to the need. Too often that method has the potential to burn people out.

One of the greatest difficulties in church life is to determine who we are and what we have been called to, determining our capability, seeing the potential and recognizing the responsibility to do what is needed to do. Continue reading Playing Games – Too Often What We See Is Like Playing A Game

Hospitality – Honor – Home – How Do you Rate?

empty chairsIt is nearly Thanksgiving…Usually one of the first shots at “family”. (Sometimes in more ways than one!) I want to be clear, as I “unpack” something. My childhood table did not always happen well. We had drunkenness, fights and even blood…So hear my heart. Jesus can “grow” you up.

Hospitality

I love people. It doesn’t matter whether they are friends, family or foes. I really do. (I drive my wife crazy sometimes. I am sure she can tell you how many hundreds have set at our table, slept in our beds, on our couches and more over 20 years. This year will be no different. And it probably is one of the major reasons I bemoan the loss of our home through no fault of ours. NO ROOM!) Continue reading Hospitality – Honor – Home – How Do you Rate?
